Truckee River December

It is a beautiful and quiet time of year up here! Fishing can be pretty fair too!

The Truckee is experiencing a warm weather window right now. Air temps range from mid 20s at night to mid 40s daytime. In the sun, without wind, the apparent temp feels 58+.
A windbreaker over fleece, and a fleece hat is standard issue, in the morning, and evening.
I’ve been stripping down to a baseball cap, and lighter insulating shirt in the afternoon.
There is some patchy snow, and in places shore ice.
Parking isn’t allowed on the roads, after Nov. 15th; but since there is very little accumulated snow, access is still good.
It’s primarily a small bug time of year. Midges, and BWOs are the most common insects.
There is a peak warming swing both in the air, and water each day that it’s sunny.
The bugs cycle with it, and the fish just follow along.
Prime time for fishing some dries, between 11:00 am – 2:00
Of course, you can fish before, and after these times using other styles.
The majority of our fishing now is sub-surface, primarily using an indicator, light weight, and 1-2 flies. I swing streamers, just slowly, the fish are a little slower due to 38 deg water.
