May 1st….

Have decided to occupy the Truckee River today!
Trout fishermen unite!!!
Just give me some room to cast……

Man, it is nice out……
Waited six months for this!
Flows are slightly high, but very fishable.
Green clear AM/mid morning, about 52deg.
Will drop in the PM.
That seems to slow the bugs, and so on…..
Drift every rock in slower runs.
A very practiced drift will serve you well.
Bring a bigger stick for bigger fish/flows.
Like my Sage 6wt 99, near town.
A 6wt Z- switch rod gives great advantage in larger water.
A few locals have switched….
Bring lots of flies. Bloody beaver sticks lead to more lost flies….
Waters too big to go get most of them….

A large range of bugs exist in the T.
Bring a seine, and use it.
Less guessing that way.
Throw in a specimen vial, and take the bug to the store, or your vice.
Just like veggies, locally grown flies are best.
Keep eyes open for daily changes.
I watch the birds a lot for bug clues too…
Speaking of birds…American dippers are feeding their babies.
Watch the feeding adults to find their hidden nest, it’s very near water.
If we had waterfalls they would nest underneath.
Amazing…to watch them feed underwater as well.

Wade carefully, maybe bring a staff.
A couple times I’ve aborted the wade, and returned to shore.
Don’t be too bold, there is a whole season to fish.

Much more to come….have to fish now..
