Ants, Termites…..

Flying Ant-wingedLast evening, as I walked back to the truck, I saw a dead tree swarming with Brewers Blackbirds…….no other trees had any activity, so I went to take a look. Termites were emerging in large numbers. Some birds ate them as they came out of a hole in the tree. Others were eating on the wing, but everyone was feeding like it was a last meal.

Every year we have an emergence of Ants…….little black and red ones…numerous and tasty apparently. Then, we have the big black Carpenter Ants…….Most folks that own a home made of wood dislike these large wood eaters…….We also have Termites flying as well…….The good news is…….. the Trout love them!  Full of formic acid they are the fishes version of sweet tarts…Bitter but yummy!

So when you see these bugs out and about, serve them up…….either as a dry, or thoroughly drowned. It happens once a year…..are you ready?
