February……

A nippy 6 deg. this morning. It makes the high of 31 deg. seem down-right balmy. I often say the best part of winter fishing is there is no need to get up early. Of course I still do, how else would I get the word out to my followers? If you have been watching the flows, you know we are in our mid-winter mode. The town run is steady at 155cfs, and the canyon is a perfect 299cfs. The water is clear and cold@ 38deg. Bring extra socks……. My take on the menu is the same as the fishes. MIDGES!!!! I sat with a friend and watched for risers….at about 12:30 it starts to slowly happen. Millions of midges are returning to the water to meet their mate, or several. They are a copulating bunch when they get going. Anyway, they are all skating around on the surface and almost invisible individually, and the fish are really not looking for an individual anyway. They like those multiple bites! The clump fly is the key to success when you see several of the lustful bugs clinging to each other…….Picture eating a handful of M&Ms instead of just one at a time. Makes sense right? There are a few Baetis flying occasionally, but definitely not the main course. It’s just too blue sky for them to be happy. might be an ok second fly though……The rest of the time fish subsurface. Find a deep slow drift and make it so. Give a call if you have question.
